James Stevens MP Media Release: Climate Ambassador’s 20 carbon-emitting overseas trips in 20 months

Climate Ambassador’s 20 carbon-emitting overseas trips in 20 months

11 November 2024

Australia’s Ambassador for Climate Change has taken 20 overseas trips in the last 20 months, costing taxpayers more than $250,000.

Documents released to the Opposition under Freedom of Information laws show the staggering jet-setting undertaken by Australia’s carbon reduction representative.

The Albanese Government reinstated the position of Climate Change Ambassador, announcing Kristin Tilley’s appointment to the role on 5 November 2022.

Ms Tilley wasted no time in getting to work, boarding an international flight that same day.

“It is staggering to see how much carbon dioxide the Australian Government is emitting in pursuit of reducing carbon dioxide emissions,” Opposition government waste spokesman James Stevens said.

“These latest revelations go to show that the main priority of the Albanese Government’s climate change agenda is flying around the world to attend lavish events, summits and jamborees – one of the most carbon-intensive activities you can engage in.

“Our Ambassador for Climate Change could be setting an example, but instead is spewing out fuel emissions on monthly international trips.

“The irony and hypocrisy is astounding and scandalous,” Mr Stevens said.
