A Liberal Government will build the Greater Adelaide Freight Bypass to get heavy trucks off Portrush Road. This is a billion-dollar commitment, with 80% coming from the Commonwealth and 20% from the SA Government. We will get to work immediately to finally fix this long-standing burden on our local community.
The bypass will allow freight trucks that currently travel down the South Eastern Freeway and onto Portrush Road to take a different route around the Adelaide Hills. This route is welcomed by the road transport industry and will be a preferred alternative for truck drivers as they can stay at high speed, avoid metropolitan traffic and intersections, consume less fuel, and reduce engine maintenance.
This commitment is a massive win for our local community and having lived most of my life within a few hundred metres of Portrush Road, I know it will enhance safety and reduce congestion on the busiest road in the Sturt electorate.
Labor is attempting to appear supportive of the bypass – but they have announced only half the funding required, the bulk of which is more than 4 years away. Even the SA Labor Government have rejected the principle of 50% funding. With the Commonwealth providing 80% of funding for important infrastructure projects in other states, it is disappointing that the Federal Labor Government is only prepared to fund 50% of this project for SA.
There is now a clear choice in this election – the Liberal Party’s commitment to build the bypass, or Labor’s plan to half-fund it which means it will never happen.
