Greens Dangerous Plan to Shut Down Adelaide's Naval Shipbuilding Industry

11 Feb 2025

The Greens Party have recently announced that they will scrap the AUKUS submarine program, shutting down the construction of submarines in Adelaide for decades into the future. The Greens have separately called for the scrapping of the Hunter-class frigate program currently under construction in Adelaide.

These dangerous policy positions will result in the closure of the naval shipbuilding industry in South Australia with the loss of thousands of direct jobs and potentially tens of thousands indirectly.

The future of Australia's ability to defend our nation and our interests is underpinned by our AUKUS submarine fleet which will transform the capability of the Royal Australian Navy.

There is a danger that the Labor Party will form a coalition with the Greens after the next election. This would be devastating for Australia's national security and South Australia's industrial base.

The Liberal Party will never negotiate to form government with the Greens, nor will we preference them at the next election. The South Australian Labor Party must provide the same guarantee to the people of South Australia. Tens of thousands of South Australian jobs are on the line.
