On Sunday I announced that a future Coalition Government will establish the Linear Park Connection Project to fund environmental and recreational improvements to Linear Park.
A Coalition Government will commit $10 million to this fund, which will allow local councils with responsibility for maintaining sections of Linear Park to apply for funding of up to 50% for projects within their section of the park.
Examples of the types of improvements that will be eligible for funding include better lighting along the walking/cycling paths, creating locations for coffee carts, installing more community BBQs, drinking fountains and toilets, and building nature plays for children.
Environmental enhancements will also be supported through this fund, to improve the health of the River Torrens, its tributaries and its riverbank. This will support the longer-term objective of re-introducing native species into the river system, like the platypus.
Linear Park is an environmental and recreational treasure running through the heart of our city and while it is beautiful, it is also underutilised and in need of further investment.
The Linear Park Connection Project will protect and transform this precious open space.
This investment will significantly improve the amenity of Linear Park and the River Torrens while protecting and enhancing its wild, natural state for future generations.
It is an opportunity to turn our river and riverbank into a place that more people can enjoy every day, whether it be a leisurely walk or ride along the path, enjoying a coffee on the riverbank, or taking the kids to a playground.
The project will also provide support towards planting more trees to create an urban forest that will cool our city and leave an enduring legacy for future generations.
I am excited about our vision, and I want to know what you would like to see in Linear Park. To help us shape the vision for the Linear Park Connection Project and to learn more visit https://linearpark.com.au/
