Sturt Schools To Receive Remembrance Day Mail Out

STURT SCHOOLS TO RECEIVE REMEMBRANCE DAY MAIL OUT

REMEMBRANCE Day is one of the most significant dates on our calendar and this week schools and community groups across Sturt will be provided with free resources to assist them in commemorating Remembrance Day 2020 in a dignified and respectful manner.

Member for Sturt, James Stevens MP said the mail out is one way the Australian Government is supporting the community to remember the service and sacrifice of the more than 102,000 Australians who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in the service of our nation.

“Each year at the 11^th hour, of the 11^th day, of the 11^th month, our entire nation pauses to remember those who have died in wars, conflicts and peace operations, a fitting and solemn tribute to our fallen,” Mr Stevens said.

“The mail out includes posters, educational activities, and other great resources that tell the story of our wartime history which will assist schools and community groups to commemorate Remembrance Day in a dignified and respectful manner.

“This year’s mail out includes material that looks back at the Second World War, which ended 75 years ago this year, and recognises the important roles that families and communities played in supporting the war effort on the home front.

“I encourage all Australians to reach out to, and take the opportunity to thank our Second World War veterans, of which around 12,000 are still with us today.”

Mr Stevens said Remembrance Day was especially significant in Sturt, with our region having a deep and committed history of military service.

“We will never forget those who have given their lives in the service of our nation and I am pleased that the Government is able to help our local schools and community groups to remember in this way,” Mr Stevens said.

“I encourage all Sturt residents to come together on the 11^th of the 11^th, as we do every year, to take a moment to reflect on the sacrifice of those who have given their lives so that we can live ours.”

This year’s Remembrance Day posters feature Australians celebrating the declaration of peace at the end of the Second World War on the 15^th of August 1945, as well as Royal Australian Air Force personnel receiving official news of Japan’s surrender on the same day.

Due to coronavirus, this year aged care facilities will only receive a letter from the Minister for Veterans’ Affairs and Victorian schools will receive a digital version of the mail out.
