James Stevens MP Media Release: Kevin Rudd's Party Palace

Kevin Rudd's Party Palace

18 August 2024

New Freedom of Information documents reveal the significant costs of Keven Rudd's lavish parties at the Australian Embassy in the United States. In January of this year, Ambassador Rudd hosted an Awards Gala Night in Washington D.C. and in typical Rudd-style, no expense was spared.

Paying $26,000 for an emcee and over $36,000 for an Opera singer to perform for the guests, were just two of the costs that contributed to the almost $300,000 bill Ambassador Rudd racked up.

"Thanks to Anthony Albanese’s captain’s call in appointing him as Australia’s Ambassador to the US, Kevin Rudd is having quite the time in Washington, turning the Australian Embassy into a party house. From pride parties to glitzy gala dinners, Rudd’s reputation for indulging in fun and frivolity is well and truly intact,” Opposition Waste spokesman, James Stevens said.

“Australia is quickly gaining a reputation in the US for lavish parties and high living. This could not be further from the experience of Australian families who are struggling to pay their mortgages, rent and electricity bills under the Albanese Government.

“Everyday Australians would be horrified to learn that our international diplomats are revelling in such largesse. Anthony Albanese must explain to the Australian public why he thinks it is appropriate for our Ambassador to behave in this way.

“Regrettably, this is just the latest example of the Albanese Government wasting money on the wrong priorities, while Australians suffer a prolonged and damaging cost of living crisis,” Mr Stevens said.
