Protecting open space at the UniSA Magill Campus for sport and recreation

Our local area is in desperate need of more recreational facilities to cater for the ongoing growth across the many sporting clubs in the eastern and north eastern suburbs.

The merger of the universities of Adelaide and South Australia has raised serious concern about the future of the Magill Campus of UniSA. Selling off the land to developers for high-density housing will put further pressure on our overburdened infrastructure as well as seeing vital open space lost forever.

There is an exciting alternative option for this land, particularly the empty parcel on the east side of St Bernards Road which is currently vacant and ready for immediate use.

A number of local sporting clubs have approached me, with ideas to develop this land into a multi code recreational precinct. I strongly support this rare opportunity to protect open space for our community and provide much needed facilities for a number of local sporting clubs.

The Malinauskas Government has opened a tender for the master planning of the redevelopment of the UniSA Magill campus into a site that could contain a variety of housing options, including townhouses and medium to high-density housing (2 to 5 storeys). The State Government needs to change course and protect our precious open space from intense housing development. As the local federal Member of Parliament, I want to work with all levels of government to fund sporting and recreational investments on this land.
