Reducing Natural Disaster Risk and Building Resilience in Sturt

Reducing Natural Disaster Risk and Building Resilience in Sturt

20 Apr 2022

The Australian Government is reducing the risk and minimising the impact to communities of flood events in Sturt by directly funding the Trinity Valley Stormwater Management Upgrade, one of 158 projects across the country that shared in $150 million dollars from the Commonwealth Government.

$9.9 million through the Preparing Australian Communities Program - Local stream will improve stormwater infrastructure to reduce the risk of flooding in St Morris, Trinity Gardens, Maylands and Stepney.

This forms part of an investment by the Australian Government of $600 million over six years to build the nation’s resilience to natural disasters through the Preparing Australia Program.

I recently joined Simon Birmingham onsite to discuss the project at the Linde Reserve, one location which will benefit from the Trinity Valley Stormwater Management Upgrade. The $9.9 million federal investment will support the $19.8m project which will reduce the risk of flooding by constructing new infrastructure to capture and detain flood water.

This project will reduce the frequency and severity of flooding to business and private property, and a reduction in flood hazard to the general public. Work on the project is expected to start at the end of the year.

We've also delivered $420,000 to enable the $1.62 million Seventh Avenue Flood Mitigation project in St Peters for the construction of new stormwater management infrastructure to capture and detain stormwater under Round 2 of the National Flood Mitigation Infrastructure Program.

In delivering these programs, the Australian Government is not only increasing disaster preparedness and resilience, but also reducing the cost in time and money of recovery following future disasters.

I will continue to advocate for projects that prepare and protect our community from future devastating flood events.
