As Remembrance Day approaches, it is a time to reflect on the service and sacrifice made by our veterans.
The Virtual War Memorial Australia (VWMA) is a digital commemorative collection that honours the service and personal experiences of all those who have served the nation in times of war and armed conflict from the Boer War through to Afghanistan, including Peacekeeping missions. Offering an integrated and verified dataset of over 1.5 million service personnel, it is the only memorial of its kind nationally and internationally.
As a national memorial, it honours those who died in service and those who returned and continued to forge this nation's character. Out of a total of 1.6 million who served in all conflicts, 103,000 service personnel lost their lives.
Importantly the VWMA invites the community to participate in this important national storytelling and encourages all families, veterans and others to contribute to the VWMA data base, by adding photos, memorabilia and other images.
Participating in the VWMA will help capture the stories and experiences of the men and women who did extraordinary things through their wartime service and will connect individuals to conflicts, units, places, community memorials, and cemeteries around the country and overseas.
These contributions will ensure that future generations will be able to discover and connect to information about military history and their own family heroes.
